Apples HealthKit….Successful Landing or Impact Crater?

cybersecurity, healthcare, technology

Technology moves at a frenzied pace as companies attempt to keep up with their consumers wants and needs. The Commercial side of technology with new offerings daily, is usually well ahead of any Cybersecurity implications or considerations and security can be a near after thought. (if thought about at all)

The magic question for Cybersecurity Practitioners shouldn’t be…

“Is this an issue?!” …..but “What opportunity does this present?”

Apple’s recent press release and information on their HealthKit had many in the Cybersecurity space immediately looking at this not as the business boon and golden egg laying goose it could be but as a catastrophe waiting to happen.

The potential of Apple HealthKit to interconnect iOS users with a broad range of specialized, highly personal data and new applications that can use that data should be an exciting step forward for individual users and healthcare providers globally. It also means that iOS developers will have to be cognizant of the privacy and security rules intended to protect the health data involved and the paths it travels. Application Security is not a new animal by any stretch and will be key in the successful utilization of technology opportunities like Apples HealthKit. Working with the Mayo Clinic, Apple is demonstrating serious focus on doing just that.

Effort in concert with organizations like Apple, the Mayo Clinic, healthcare developers and Cybersecurity professionals will go a long way in providing patients and their doctors not only the holistic data abilities they want and need but push forward the type of security framework required today and in the future.
